Ocean Governance

It involves partners from the Americas, Africa, Europe, and Asia

2021-2025.

LIFE INTEMARES is a collaborator in this project.

Ocean Governance is an international cooperation project between networks of managers of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) on a global scale. These networks of managers are essential catalysts and facilitators for the development of well-managed ecological MPA networks, the goal of their work. It links key players in the Atlantic basin in Africa, Europe, North and South America and Southeast Asia.

It aims to contribute to the achievement of EU objectives in the field of international ocean governance and to the implementation of EU global commitments on sustainable development, climate change and biodiversity. It promotes the achievement of Marine Protected Area targets under key current and future international conventions and supports the EU’s efforts to meet the “30 by 30” target of protecting at least 30% of the oceans by 2030 and maintaining European leadership in this field.

Among its objectives, it pursues:

  • Promotion of a process for greater cooperation on MPAs between and within the Atlantic and South-East Asian regions.
  • Helping to implement measures to restore marine and coastal ecosystems in Southeast Asia.
  • Facilitate broader regional cooperation on marine and coastal resilience in the Southeast Asian region to underpin stability in the region.
  • Contribute to the effective management of MPAs in the Atlantic and Southeast Asia.
