LIFE Posidonia Andalucía

Regional Government of Andalusia – Department of Environment and Territorial Organisation

Spain 2011-2015

The project operated in 9 Sites of Community Importance (SCIs) in Andalusia with the aim of improving the conservation status of Posidonia oceanica meadows on the Andalusian Mediterranean coast:

  • Sea beds of the Levante Almeriense.
  • San Andres Island.
  • Cabo de Gata-Níjar.
  • Seabed of Punta Entinas Sabinar.
  • Posidonia oceanica barrier reef in the Bajos de Roquetas.
  • Cliffs of Maro Cerro-Gordo.
  • Calahonda.
  • El Saladillo-Punta de Baños Seabed.
  • Seabed of the Bay of Estepona, located in the provinces of Almeria, Granada, and Malaga.

LIFE Posidonia Andalucía has made known the current state of the meadows and how they are likely to evolve in the future. It also has a detailed mapping of the grasslands.

The project has implemented a comprehensive grassland monitoring plan, allowing early detection of degrading ecosystems.

Main achievements of the project:

  • Reduce by 80% the threat posed by anchoring boats and the aggression caused by uncontrolled trawling in two of the most interesting meadows in the area.
  • Social awareness of the environmental and economic value of Andalusia’s ecosystems has increased. These ecosystems serve as nursery and spawning grounds for fish species of great commercial interest. They are also a fundamental attraction for the development of a sustainable tourism sector and a key element in stabilising the coastline.
