The European Union (EU) has a financing instrument dedicated exclusively to the environment and climate, the LIFE program.
The purpose of this program is to contribute to the implementation, update and development of EU environmental and climate policy and legislation, through the co-financing of projects that provide added value at a European level.
The European Commission, the EU body that manages the LIFE Program, delegates the implementation of many components of the program to the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises.
LIFE IP INTEMARES is part of a special group of LIFE Program projects that are known as Integrated Projects (IP).
The Integrated Projects arise from the need to make it easier for the EU Member States to apply European environmental and climate legislation. They allocate funds for plans, programs and strategies and are developed at a regional or national level.
THE INTEGRATED PROJECTS HELP MEMBER STATES TO COMPLY WITH KEY EU LEGISLATION IN SIX AREAS:
- Mitigation and adaptation to climate change
HOW DO INTEGRATED PROJECTS PROMOTE COMPLIANCE WITH LEGISLATION?
Unlike other LIFE projects, they allow Member States to use other sources of EU funding, including agricultural, structural, regional and research funds, as well as national funds and private sector investments.
The Integrated Projects are classified, either within the subprogram for Climate Action, or within the subprogram for the Environment, to which the LIFE IP INTEMARES project belongs.
Projects under the Environment subprogramme implement, on a large territorial scale, environmental plans or strategies required by specific EU environmental legislation. These are developed in accordance with other EU laws, or drawn up by Member State authorities, mainly in the areas of nature, water, waste and air.
The implementation of the aforementioned plans or strategies should ensure stakeholder participation and promote the coordination and mobilization of at least one other relevant source of funding, national or private, from the EU.
THE LIFE PROGRAM HAS FINANCED THE FOLLOWING INTEGRATED PROJECTS IN SPAIN:
- LIFE IP NADAPTA-CC, whose main objective is to increase resilience to climate change in the Navarra region.
- RBMP-DUERO, which works to implement the Duero river basin management plan.
- LIFE-IP URBAN KLIMA 2050, which contributes to implementing the 2050 climate strategy in the Basque Country.
- LIFE IP INTEMARES is the only integrated environmental project in Spain.
